There are a number of ovarian tumors and they fall into benign, borderline, and malignant categories. About 80% are benign, and occur in young women while the malignant tumors are more common in older women. Classification of these tumors is based on tissue of origin;
i. Surface epithelial tumors: derived from the coelomic epithelium
Ii.Germ cell tumors: derived from pluripotent germ cells
Iii.Sex cord stromal tumors: forerunners of the endocrine apparatus of the postnatal ovary.
iv. Unclassified tumors.
v. Metastatic tumors.
