45years old female presented with mass per abdomen.
1. Specimen of cystic ovary with stretched out fallopian tube on the surface
2. Cut surface shows multiloculated cysts with few cysts filled with mucinous material
1. Cyst wall lined by tall columnar epithelium, with apical mucin and the nucleus being pushed to the base.
2. Subepithelium shows fibrocollagenous tissue.
Mucinous cystadenoma
1) Describe the gross features of the specimen.
Specimen of cystic ovary with stretched out fallopian tube on the surface. Cut surface shows multiloculated cysts with a few cysts filled with mucinous material.
2) Identify the microscopic features of the given slide.
Cyst wall lined by tall columnar epithelium, with apical mucin and the nucleus being pushed to the base. Subepithelium shows fibrocollagenous tissue.
3) Diagnose the pathological condition correlating the history, gross and microscopic features.
The diagnosis is mucinous cystadenoma
4) What is the malignant counterpart called?
The malignant counterpart is called mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.
5) What are the gross features of the malignant counterpart?
The malignant counterpart shows solid and cystic areas filled with mucin. Areas of haemorrhage and necrosis are usually seen. Microscopically there is a breach in the lining epithelium and infiltration into the subepithelial fibrocollagenous stroma.
