Gynecologic pathology includes congenital lesions, infections, inflammatory conditions, functional endometrial disorders and neoplastic lesions involving the various parts of the female reproductive tract.
Endometrium under the influence of the sex steroid hormones produced by the ovary undergoes morphological changes during menstrual cycle. The ovary in turn is influenced by the hormones produced by the hypothalamus and pituitary. The interactions of all the factors regulate maturation of ovarian follicles, ovulation and menstruation.
The histological appearance of endometrium is useful to assess the hormonal status, ovulation status and to determine the causes of abnormal endometrial bleeding and infertility.
