These are most common kind of thyroid nodule, they are benign, noncancerous enlargement of thyroid tissue. Although they may grow large, and they may be multiple nodules, they are not malignant and do not spread beyond the thyroid gland.
1. Specimen of enlarged thyroid gland having nodular external surface.

Thyroid follicles are of varying sizes with variable amounts of interspersed fibrous tissue
Follicles filled with colloid and lined by cuboidal to flattened epithelium.
Colloid goiter
1.Identify the organ and write gross features of the specimen.
ANS: The specimen of thyroid which is enlarged and shows grey tan colloid filled follicles.
2.Write the microscopic features and diagnosis.
ANS: Sections show thyroid follicles of different sizes filled and distended with colloid and lined by flattened to cuboidal epithelium with areas of haemorrhage.
Diagnosis: Diffuse colloid goitre.
3.What is the common etiological factor for this condition.
ANS: Iodine deficiency.
4.What happens to thyroid profile in this condition?
ANS: There will be decreased levels of T3, T4& associated increase in TSH.
5.What is the treatment?
ANS: - Thyroxine supplementation
- Subtotal thyroidectomy in some cases.
