Actinomycosis is a chronic bacterial infection caused by filamentous, gram-positive, non–acid-fast, anaerobic bacteria. It is characterized by contiguous spread, suppurative / granulomatous inflammation, and formation of multiple abscesses with sinus tracts that may discharge sulfur granules. The most common clinical forms are cervicofacial, thoracic and abdominal.
Presents as abscess with draining sinuses, tissue fibrosis and occasionally as a soft tissue mass mimicking a tumor
Multiple subcutaneous abscesses with discharging sinuses extruding sulphur granules.
Basophilic actinomycotic colonies with Splendor-Hoepli eosinophilic material
Colonies surrounded by inflammatory cells composed of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells.
